Svetlana Zakharova

Svetlana Zakharova. A truly marvellous dancer, and tremendously talented. Today I'd like to talk about her life, and each of the steps she took to be where she is today.

Svetlana is a principal ballerina in both the Bolshoi ballet and the Teatro alla Scala. She was bor the 10th of July, 1979From the age of six, she was on her feet, practising fold dancing at a local studio. When she reach double digits, she was accepted into the Kiev Choreographic School. Four months later, due to her father's reassignment in the army to East Germany Svetlana was forced to leave the school. Six months later, her family returned to Ukraine and Svetlana auditioned again for the Kiev Choreographic School. She was readmitted and immediately joined the second class, under teacher Valeria Sulegina.
In 1996–1997, she debuted with the Mariinsky Ballet. In 2003–2004, uncontent with her position, she joined the Bolshoi Ballet. Today, Zakharova tours and guests with the world's great ballet companies. She is considered one of the greatest ballerinas of the generation. She is highly regarded for her technical expertise, for her beautiful footwork and for her exceptionally high extensions, as well as her great artistry. Zakharova was awarded the Prix Benois de la Danse  in 2005 and theState Prize of the Russian Federation in 2006.

She is married to Russian violinist Vadim Repin. The couple have one child, a daughter Anna, who was born on February 17, 2011. Zakharova had withdrawn from the Bolshoi Ballet tour to London in the summer of 2010 citing a hip injury; in fact she was pregnant at the time. Zakharova returned to dancing, and performed in London on May 15, 2011, in a gala performance celebrating Galina Ulanova.

She is greaty admired all over the word by dancers, ballet teachers and students, and indeed myself. I regard her style as exquisite and believe she has the perfect body for a ballerina. I'd like to greatly thank her for giving me someone to admire and look up to, and for every moment of watching her dance.

Introduction

Ballet. Everyone has heard of it before. Everyone thinks they know what it is. But not many people actually understand it. If we were to look for the word 'ballet' in the dictionary, we would probably find something like this: an artistic dance form performed to music, using precise and formalized set steps and gestures. But to us ballet dancers it is much more.
For some it's a hobbie, for others a lifestyle; but for me, ballet is a feeling.

And this is why I want to dedicate this blog to the art that I love. It will include curiosities, famous ballet dancers and choreograohers, famous ballets and the stories, and so much more. Are you ready for a dancetastic journey? :)
